Photography Classes

At Michael Roman Photography we love to photograph but there's only so much of that one can do. So the next best thing is to talk photography. While doing that we've found that there are a good number of people who are also interested in photography and would like to learn more about it but may not be sure where to start. With that in mind we are now offering photography classes. Our current offerings are Photography - The Basics and Photography - Beyond the Basics.

Regularly scheduled classes run one night a week from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, but other times are available depending on the level of interest. Class sizes are limited in order to provide the best learning experience and plenty of opportunity for one-on-one instruction.

Classes are held at the studio of Michael Roman Photography in Northborough.

The instructor is Michael Roman, CPP. Michael is a professional portrait and wedding photographer from Northborough. He is a member of the Professional Photographers of America as well as its regional and state affiliates and has won numerous medals and awards in photographic competitions. Michael has judged many local and regional photo competitions as well as several International Salons and has taught photography in various capacities around the area. He also leads the Portrait Special Interest Group of the Boston West Photographic Society.

Looking for a great gift idea, especially for the person who has everything ... including a camera? Gift certificates are available!

Photography - The Basics

Photography - The Basics is the beginner’s introduction to photography, and How to Make the Most of your Camera. This six week class is for those who want to get the most out of their 35mm camera (including their care and feeding!). "What’s an f-stop—and can I use that term in mixed company? How does the shutter control light and motion? Composition? I thought that was something we did in English class! Both digital and film cameras will be covered in this class. There will be weekly class assignments and photo critiques. Class size is limited. See below for the class schedule and call or email to reserve your spot now – mr@michaelromanphoto.com or 774-641-6278. The cost of the course is only $125 and includes a student work book for each student.

What is covered in the class? The basic operation of your camera and the ASC’s of photography (Apertures, Shutter-speeds, and Composition). There will also be weekly class assignments and photo critiques as well as demonstrations, slide presentations, and “play time” in the camera room where you get to use your camera. This is very much a “hands on” class, with a great deal of one-on-one instruction. A 35mm camera (either film or digital) with interchangeable lenses and a manual override is highly recommended for class. Point-and-shoot cameras lack the creative control for many of the assignments, but the instruction should still be valuable. Absolutely no experience is needed.

This class is perfect for someone who received a camera as a gift or has a camera they would like to learn how to use more effectively!

Photography - Beyond The Basics

Photography - Beyond The Basics is the follow on to the basics course, but the basics class is not a prerequisite to take this class. It's an eight week class that is made for those who understand the basics of photography and their camera but who would like to become more proficient at creating more visually appealing photos. As with the basics class there will be weekly class assignments and photo critiques. Class size is strictly limited. See below for the class schedule and call or email to reserve your spot now – mr@michaelromanphoto.com or 774-641-6278. The cost of the course is $165 and includes a student work book for each student.

What is covered in the class? Beyond The Basics will focus on the more artistic side of photography with more emphasis on composition and creativity. You'll learn about the elements and principles of visual design as well as using industry standards to understand what makes an award winning image. There will be a class field trip where you'll have the opportunity to practice your new skills in a live situation.
